Chess is a two-player strategy board game that has been played for centuries and is one of the most popular games in the world.

  • Board & Pieceseces:

    • Played on an 8×8 checkered board (64 squares, alternating light and dark colors).

    • Each player starts with 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns.

    • One player controls the white pieces and the other controls the black pieces.

  • Objective:

    • The main goal is to checkmate the opponent’s king, meaning the king is under attack (“in check”) and has no legal move to escape.

  • Movement:

    • Each type of piece moves in its own unique way:

      • King → one square in any direction.

      • Queen → any number of squares in any direction (vertically, horizontally, diagonally).

      • Rook → straight lines (horizontal or vertical).

      • Bishop → diagonally.

      • Knight → “L” shape (two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular).

      • Pawn → forward one square (two on its first move), captures diagonally.

  • Special Rules:

    • Castling (king + rook move together for safety).

    • En passant (special pawn capture).

    • Pawn promotion (a pawn reaching the opposite side can turn into a queen, rook, bishop, or knight).

  • Game End:

    • A game can end in checkmate, stalemate, draw by agreement, insufficient material, threefold repetition, or 50-move rule.

  • Nature of the Game:

    • Chess is a perfect information, zero-sum game — both players see all possible moves, and one player’s gain is the other’s loss.

    • It requires strategy, tactics, foresight, and planning.
