1. A capacitor charges through a 1kΩ resistor from a 9V source
2. Closing the switch turns on all three LEDs, charging the capacitors with each LED
3. Opening the switch cuts power, and each capacitor slowly discharges through its LED, keeping it glowing
4. Each branch has a different resistor value, so each LED will have a different fade time
